dachte heute so ueber pxeinstallation (netzwerinstallation) von ubuntu bzw. ueber die debootstrap installation (auch per netz) von virtuellen ubuntumaschinen nach. natuerlich brauchen solche installationen eine funktionierende internetverbindung damit bei der netzwerkinstallation der installer auch die benoetigten pakete von den verwendeten ubuntu paket servern herunter laden kann. so waere es doch praktikabel wenn man einen eigenen paket server hat damit die pakete nicht bei jeder installation aus dem internet heruntergeladen werden muessen und die bandbreite unnoetig belastet wird (außerdem kann ich dann mit 1000MB/s darauf zugreifen). aber wer hat schon die ressourcen einen ubuntu mirror bereitzustellen.
beim schmoekern sind mir ein paar viel passendere tools untergekommen: apt-proxy, apt-cacher, apt-cacher-ng und approx (arbeiten alle nach dem selben prizip, wie ein http-proxy). nach reichlichem recherchieren und der vergangenen schlechten erfahrung mit apt-proxy bin ich zu dem entschluss gekommen approx als die bevorzugte loesung anzusehen.
voller motivation hab ich gleich einen server aufgesetzt (dexter, hardy, kvm) und approx drauf geschnuert. im vorkonfigurierten configfile habe ich die ubuntu quellen eingetragen (copy/paste aus dem unten angefuehrten howto) und anschließend den dienst neu gestartet. auf den clients war es nur noetig in der /etc/apt/sources.list bzw. dem vm-builder install script anstatt den gewohnten ubuntu mirrors einzutragen
...und zu meiner freude haben tests an drei clients ergeben, dass es im gegensatz zu apt-proxy wirklich stabil laeuft und vms in weniger als einer minute fertig installiert sind :-)
